The plasma beam adds a powerful long-range secondary attack to your machine gun. It's got a similar role to the impact grenade, although it works differently - slash it across a crowd of weaker enemies to cut them down, or keep your crosshairs on the enemy from a distance to blast enemies at long range.
If you focus on a single target, the plasma beam can do some serious damage. Even tough enemies won't be able to shrug off more than a couple of bursts. Overall a very flexible and effective secondary weapon.
