The Combat shotgun the default shotgun configuration, and fires a burst of inaccurate pellets with decent stopping power at point-blank range. Unlike the machine gun, when you get close in with the shotgun you can drop enemies before you take any damage. You'll need an alternative pickup weapon if you want to engage anything at long distance.
As you might expect, your shotgun is initially strong only at very close range. As you collect bonuses to improve its accuracy and especially damage, it'll get useful for taking down foes further and further out. Anything hardier than gluttons can take a couple of blasts before they drop, and this means you'll have to react fast when fighting with this gun; there's very little margin for error.
