The Burst rifle is an upgraded railgun. Instead of a single projectile that travels instantly to a point more-or-less where you put the crosshairs, the rifle shoots a quick burst of energy bolts that take a little time to get to the target, are less damaging and less accurate. Landing all three shots does slightly more damage than a single railgun round, but that's a big ask given the rifle's inferior accuracy. Firing rate is also low and clip size is very small, so this isn't a reliable weapon for fighting at mid or close-range either. To do real damage, you end up having to aim for the enemy's head to drop them quickly - something you can usually forgo with the railgun when dealing with gluttons at least. Finally, the burst of shots makes it harder to score kills when strafing, because you can't just time your shots for when the crosshairs is over an enemy - you have to stay on target to get maximum damage.
On the plus side, it looks cool.
